<strong>AI agents<\/strong> are your digital team members, powered by large language models, that tackle those \u201cwhy-am-I-doing-this-again?\u201d jobs nobody wants and much more. They learn from interactions, tap into both internal and external data, run code on the fly, access other applications and resources, and can even trigger external APIs\u2014like digital assistants with serious muscle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What\u2019s new? Modern AI agents aren\u2019t just glorified chatbots anymore. They can:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pull in context<\/strong> from previous chats or external data<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Run code<\/strong> (thanks to cool stuff like the Code Interpreter),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Integrate with your business apps<\/strong> (CRM, ERP, custom APIs, <strong>or other Azure-based apps<\/strong>),<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Team up<\/strong> with other AI agents to tackle multi-step workflows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Few Examples:<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agentic AI systems are already showing up in a variety of real-world scenarios. In <strong>customer service<\/strong>, they\u2019re proactively resolving queries\u2014detecting issues like delayed orders, offering discounts, and pulling data from countless sources to fix problems before humans even notice. In <strong>manufacturing<\/strong>, these AI-driven \u201cvirtual factories\u201d monitor production lines, predict maintenance needs, and even suggest design tweaks to boost efficiency and quality. For <strong>sales support<\/strong>, agentic AI takes on the grunt work\u2014handling emails, setting up meetings, responding to customer questions\u2014so sales teams can spend more time closing deals. And as a last example, in <strong>health and social care<\/strong>, agentic AI can serve as empathetic virtual caregivers, guiding patients through procedures, managing medications, or just being a friendly check-in partner. Across these use cases, the common ground is greater autonomy and proactivity, enabling faster responses, specialized expertise, and a more seamless human\u2013machine collaboration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Azure AI Agent Service<\/strong> (in public preview)<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, how do you build and manage these AI super-assistants without needing a PhD in machine learning? That\u2019s where <strong>Azure AI Foundry<\/strong> comes in. It\u2019s basically your workshop for designing, testing, and deploying AI agents with minimal fuss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><strong>Ready-to-Go Tools &amp; Integrations<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1. <strong>No Heavy Lifting<\/strong>: Skip wrestling with servers and storage\u2014spin up an agent in minutes using Microsoft-managed resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2. <strong>Code Interpreter<\/strong>: Run Python in a sandbox to crunch numbers, analyze data, or generate insights\u2014all from the agent itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3. <strong>Use your Data or Search the Internet<\/strong>: Plug in your existing knowledge bases or connect external sources (like Bing Search or Azure AI Search).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">4. <strong>Easy Expansion<\/strong>: Need your agent to do more? It\u2019s all handled server-side, so your conversation history stays consistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">6.<strong> Model Options<\/strong>: Choose between OpenAIs models or the ones from Meta or Mistral among others. Your can just simply choose and deploy inside Azure AI Foundry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A quick word on the Setup: <strong>Basic vs. Standard<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Basic Setup for easy, Microsoft-managed resources or the Standard Setup for hands-on control, visibility, and cost management. Perfect if you\u2019re big on governance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">My Impression of the Agents Service<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I spent some time experimenting with this, and I\u2019m really impressed by how easy it is to build these agents within your Azure environment. Although it\u2019s still in preview and missing a few important details, it\u2019s already evident how plug-and-play the future of AI agents on Azure will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By uploading a demo document containing the 2024 sales data for a fictional bike shop\u2014and enabling the Code Interpreter tool\u2014I was able to test both RAG (retrieval augmented generation) and the Code Interpreter\u2019s ability to generate plots on the fly. For reference, setting this up with code would usually take me about an hour.
