Data Factory is a great tool for ETL pipelines, and we love working with it. However, when it comes to the integration with the rest of the non-Azure Microsoft world (especially SharePoint) it can get a bit frustrating. In a recent project I wanted to build a solution, which allows employees to upload documents from their phones via OneDrive app and its integrated scan function. The uploaded documents should then be fetched and copied to Azure Data Lake Storage using an Azure Data Factory pipeline. Seemed like a simple task until I ran into several not so simple problems. In this blog post I want to share the final solution and walk through all the necessary steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Addendum from 15.12.2022: In the meantime I expanded the solution, enabling it to copy multiple files from multiple SharePoint folders to an Azure Blob Storage, using a nested loop. If you only need to copy multiple files of one SharePoint folder the solution shown in this blog will be sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s first have a look at the final pipeline in Azure Data Factory and break it down into individual tasks to solve:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"985\" height=\"330\" src=\"https:\/\/www.syntera.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/14_architecture.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-82\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.syntera.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/14_architecture.png 985w, https:\/\/www.syntera.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/14_architecture-300x101.png 300w, https:\/\/www.syntera.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/14_architecture-768x257.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 985px) 100vw, 985px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Prerequisite:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Register SharePoint (SPO) application in Azure Active Directory (AAD).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grant SPO site permission to registered application in AAD.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Provision ResourceGroup, Azure Data Factory (ADF) and Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS) in your Azure Subscription.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Inside of ADF pipeline:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"4\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>WebActivity &#8220;GetBearerToken&#8221;: Get an access token from SPO via API call.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>WebActivity &#8220;GetSPOFolderMetadata&#8221;: Get SPO folder metadata including a list of all files in the SPO target folder using the SPO access token via API call.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CopyActivity &#8220;Copy data from SPO to ADLS&#8221; inside ForEach loop: Iterate through files in list of files and copy each file to ADLS.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Register SPO application in AAD<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To enable ADF to access content from SPO we need to register an application in AAD. Basically, we are creating an identity inside of our Azure environment and in a second step telling SPO that if someone with this identity ever shows up, he\/she can be trusted. Grant SPO site permission to registered application in AAD<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that we have created an Identity we need to grant it permission to the SPO site we want to get files from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open the SharePoint Online site link: <code>https:\/\/[your_site_url]\/_layouts\/15\/appinv.aspx<\/code>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>replace [your_site_url] with the SPO site URL e.g. if your SPO domain name was &#8220;syntera&#8221; and your SPO Site &#8220;blog&#8221; your URL would look like this:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><code>https:\/\/<strong>syntera<\/strong>.sharepoint.com\/sites\/<strong>blog<\/strong>\/_layouts\/15\/appinv.aspx<\/code><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fill in the fields as follows:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>App Id: Copy the Application (client) ID from your registered app<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Title: Choose a title<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>App Domain: <code>localhost.com<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Redirect URL: <code>https:\/\/www.localhost.com<\/code><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Permission Request XML: Insert the following code snippet:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code has-tertiary-background-color has-background\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px\"><code>&lt;AppPermissionRequests AllowAppOnlyPolicy=\"true\"&gt;\n    &lt;AppPermissionRequest Scope=\"http:\/\/sharepoint\/content\/sitecollection\/web\" Right=\"Read\"\/&gt;\n&lt;\/AppPermissionRequests&gt;<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"632\" src=\"https:\/\/www.syntera.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/05_SPOPermission-1024x632.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-63\" style=\"width:600px;height:370px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.syntera.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/05_SPOPermission-1024x632.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.syntera.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/05_SPOPermission-300x185.png 300w, https:\/\/www.syntera.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/05_SPOPermission-768x474.png 768w, https:\/\/www.syntera.ch\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/05_SPOPermission.png 1245w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Select <strong>Create<\/strong> and <strong>Trust it<\/strong> on the next page<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important<\/strong>:<br>Azure Access Control (ACS), a service of Azure Active Directory (Azure AD), has been retired on November 7, 2018. This means that if your SPO tenant was created after this date the use of ACS app-only access token is disabled by default. To enable it (necessary for this solution) run <code>set-spotenant -DisableCustomAppAuthentication $false<\/code> from your SharePoint admin PowerShell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Provision RessourceGroup, ADF and ADLS<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In Azure Portal select <strong>Resource groups<\/strong> under <strong>Navigate<\/strong> and select <strong>Create<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose your subscription, a name (in my case: dev-rg-blog-00000) and a region and select <strong>Review + create<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Azure Portal select <strong>Create a resource<\/strong> search for Azure Data Factory and select <strong>Create<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose your subscription, the resource group you created previously, a name (in my case: dev-adf-blog-00000) and a region <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under Git configuration check the box <strong>Configure Git later <\/strong>and select <strong>Review + create<\/strong> (you can configure your Git integration later following another guide if necessary for your project)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Azure Portal select <strong>Create a resource<\/strong>, search for &#8220;storage&#8221;, select <strong>Storage Account<\/strong> and then <strong>Create<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose your subscription, the resource group you created previously, a name (in my case: devadlsblog00000, a region and change the redundancy to LRS (lowest cost option &#8211; adjust for your case)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In <strong>Advanced<\/strong> under <strong>Data Lake Storage Gen2<\/strong> check the box for Enable hierarchical namespace and select <strong>Review + create<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to your created ADLS resource and under <strong>Data Storage<\/strong> select <strong>Containers<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select <strong>+ Container<\/strong> on the top, give the container a name and create it<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Create Pipeline in ADF and get access token from SPO<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that all the prerequisites are set up we can start building the pipeline in ADF. Get SPO folder metadata (list of files)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that we can retrieve access tokens from SPO we are able to get information\/files from the SPO tenant. In order to copy multiple files from a folder we first have to get a list of all files currently located in that specific folder. Iterate through list of files and copy each file to ADLS<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the list of files, we received as an output of the last web activity, we can now setup a copy job, which copies the files to ADLS. For this task we need a ForEach activity to loop trough every item in the list and a copy activity to actually copy the data. For the copy activity we need to define a source and a sink dataset, which themselves refer to linked services that define the place where a sink or source is located. In our case the sink will be the ADLS, which has a supported connector, the linked service for the source however will be managed through another API call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add a ForEach activity and connect it with the previous web activity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Under <strong>Settings<\/strong> check the box Sequential and in Items enter the following: <code>@activity('GetSPOFolderMetadata').output.value<\/code>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Replace GetSPOFolderMetadata with the name you chose for the second web activity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"979\" height=\"645\" &#8220;HTTP&#8221; and select it.<\/li><li>Define a name for your linked service (in my case: ls_spo_Blog)<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set Authentication type to Anonymous<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scroll down to <strong>Parameters<\/strong> select <strong>New<\/strong> and call it RelativeURL<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For the Base URL enter the following URL: <code>https:\/\/[sharepoint-domain-name].sharepoint.com\/sites\/[sharepoint-site]\/_api\/web\/GetFileByServerRelativeUrl('@{linkedService().RelativeURL}')\/$value<\/code>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>replace <code>[sharepoint-domain-name]<\/code> with your SPO domain name (in my case: syntera)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>replace <code><code>[sharepoint-site]<\/code><\/code> with copied.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Further Considerations<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all these steps we now have a working solution but there are some further things to be considered. We secured the output of the &#8216;GetBearerToken&#8217; activity and the input of the &#8216;GetSPOFolderMetadata&#8217; activity to ensure the access token does not get logged. However, the secret of the app we registered is still hard coded in the &#8216;GetBearerToken&#8217; activity, which means it will get logged in your pipeline runs. Consider setting up an Azure Key Vault to secure the secret of the registered app. For reusability purposes in your company, I would also advise you to parametrize all the inputs to the pipeline (e.g. the SPO Site, the application and client ID etc.).
